Maryan Association 2013 Annual Report

 

1.
Maryan Association members visited the exhibition of Pinchas Burstein’s works at Musée d’art et d’histoire du Judaisme (the Museum of Jewish Art and History) in Paris. The exhibition, held from November 5, 2013 to February 9, 2014, displayed a rich collection of Maryan’s works from throughout his life. The Association members familiarized themselves with the catalogue and individual works, as well as initiated cooperation with other employees of the Museum (Nathalie Hazan-Brunet, Catherine Thieck, Juliette Braillon, Dorota Śnieżek). Krzysztof Bojarczuk, Julie Boudreaux, Ewa Andrzejewska, Anna Florek held talks.

 

2.
Further talks and arrangements regarding hosting an exhibition of Maryan’s works in Poland with the following people and institutions:

  • modern art curators in Poland and in France
  • art collectors of Maryan’s works: Ellen and Jan Nieuwenhuizen Segaar, Michael Haas Gallery, Jacques Benador Gallery, Bernard Sberro
  • The Jewish Historical Institute of Poland, The Museum of History of Polish Jews, and other institutions.

 

3.
Applying to Urzad Miasta and to Starostwo Powiatowe for the funds to obtain materials from the Conference “Maryan (Pinchas Burstein) and his art”, organized by Maryan Association and Educational Society for Małopolska in 2010.

 

4.
In cooperation with the Regional Museum in Nowy Sącz, Maryan Association initiated efforts to publish Gustav Oster’s recollections, which provide a detailed description of the population of the Załubińcze district at the beginning of the 20th century. Gustav Oster was a Jew who lived in Nowy Sącz in the region of Załubińcze between 1900 and 1916. (Ewa Andrzejewska, Edyta Ross-Pazdyk)

 

5.
With reference to works on publishing Gustav Oster’s recollections, Maryan Association made initial inquiries to the National Archive in Nowy Sącz and to the Archive of the City of Nowy Sącz Architecture and Building Science Department.  This was an attempt to reconstruct the urban space of the 20th century Załubińcze. Collecting materials for a book about the Polish period of Maryan’s life. (Ewa Andrzejewska)

 

7.
The Association took part in preparing and participated in the ceremony of unveiling a memorial plaque commemorating Jakub Mueller, the guardian of the memory of Nowy Sącz Jews. The plaque in honor of Jakub Muller was unveiled at the gate of the Jewish cemetery on December 16, 2013, which marks the third anniversary of Jakub Mueller’s death.

 

8.
Classes and workshops for middle-school students on Maryan’s life and work (Krzysztof Bojarczuk).

 

9.
Compiling documents about Maryan and updating and upgrading the digital archive of Maryan’s works. (Krzysztof Bojarczuk)

 

10.
Promoting Pinchas Burstein’s works and the mission of Maryan Association in the local media.
