Maryan Association 2012 Annual Report

 

1.
Void Exhibition, organized by the Gallery of Modern Art BWA Sokół in Nowy Sącz. Curator Anda Rottenberg, September 8 – October 7, 2012

The exhibition was displayed in four places: the Sokół Gallery, the Gothic House, the Synagogue, and on the meadow by the Dunajec River.

The Synagogue hosted the Jewish part of the exhibition: the names of Nowy Sącz inhabitants who died in World War II, two films with Jewish themes, reconstruction of Maryan’s New York studio, and four of the artist’s works. The reconstruction of the artist’s studio was arranged by Krzysztof Bojarczuk and Ewa Andrzejewska, members of the Maryan Association.

Krystyna Piotrowska’s event “Meadow” to commemorate the liquidation of the Jewish Ghetto in Nowy Sącz was supported by the Maryan Association (Ewa Andrzejewska).

 

2.
Maryan Association was donated Maryan’s memorabilia and other objects from the artist’s New York studio, which were later used in Void Exhibition. (Remi Violland, Julie Boudreaux, Charles Merrill, Alicja Derkowska, Krzysztof Bojarczuk, Ewa Andrzejewska).

 

3.
Participation in the conference on the life and works of Janusz Korczak, organized by Pedagogical Library in Nowy Sącz. Lecture “Jewish Orphanage in Nowy Sącz”, by Ewa Andrzejewska.

 

4.
Presentation of Ewa Andrzejewska’s book „Obok inny czas” at the Festival of Music and Klezmer Tradition in Kazimierz, July 2012. The book, published in 2010 by Nisza Publishing House, deals with the Jewish community in Nowy Sącz in the Second Polish Commonwealth (II Reczpospolita) and during the Second World War.

 

5.
Collecting materials for a book about the Polish period of Maryan’s life (Ewa Andrzejewska).

 

6.
Classes and workshops for middle-school students on Maryan’s life and oeuvre (Krzysztof Bojarczuk).

 

7.
Compiling documents about Maryan and updating the digital archive of Maryan’s works.

 

8.
Planning the exhibition of Maryan’s works in Nowy Sącz Synagogue (Magdalena Kroh, Krzysztof Bojarczuk).

 

9.
Contacting and liaising with the following people and institutions for the purpose of organizing an exhibition of Maryan’s works in Poland: Anda Rottenberg, the curator of modern art exhibitions Bernard Sberro, who collected Maryan’s works and looked after his wife Natalie Hazan-Brunet, the curator of art exhibitions in Paris The Jewish Historical Institute of Poland, The Museum of History of Polish Jews, and other institutions.

 


10.
Promoting Maryan’s works and publications on Jewish themes. An article, photos of the reconstructed Maryan’s New York studio, and of reproductions of Maryan’s works were featured in the catalogue for Void Exhibition. Maryan Association members were interviewed by the local media about Maryan’s life and works at Void exhibition, as well as about the activities and plans of the Association.. (Polish Daily, Krakowska Newspaper, Sądeczanin Monthly, Sądeczanin Internet portal, Złote Przeboje Radio, and others).
